Flexible Flat Cable FFC Wiring Harness: A flexible Bridge for Connecting Electronic Devices

SAISONIC offer 0.5mm .1.0mm .1.25mm.  1.27mm and 2.54mmpitch flat flexible cables which perfectly compliments FFC connector range. SAISONIC is a leading manufacturer of various standard and custom FFC cables, with over 30 years of experience. We not only serve industries such as liquid crystal display, automotive equipment and consumer electronics, but also always exceed the expectations and standards of our customers and the industry.

In the wave of modern electronic devices pursuing thinness, miniaturization and high integration, traditional circular wire harnesses (such as flat cables or wire harnesses) often struggle due to the limitations of their volume, bending radius and assembly complexity. At this point, a wire harness technology called FFC stands out and becomes an indispensable "flexible bridge" for connecting the internal precision components.

1. What is FFC?

Full name: Flexible Flat Cable (FFC), often called "flexible flat wire" or "flat cable"and "FFC wiring harnesses" in Chinese.

Core feature: FFC is a type of ribbon cable made by laminating or bonding extremely thin, flat conductors (typically precisely etched copper foil) between flexible insulating films (commonly polyester or polyimide). Its most notable feature is that it is ultra-thin, flexible and foldable.

2. Structure and Composition of FFC Wiring Harnesses

A typical FFC wiring harness usually consists of the following key parts:

Conductor: Multiple flat copper foil wires arranged in parallel. The quantity (number of cores), width, thickness (copper foil thickness, such as 0.035mm, 0.05mm, etc.) and Pitch (Pitch, commonly 0.5mm, 1.0mm, 1.25mm, etc.) of the wires are customized according to application requirements.

Insulating layer: A flexible film covering both the upper and lower surfaces of a conductor, serving to insulate and protect.

Commonly used materials include:

Polyester: It has a relatively low cost and average heat resistance (about 105°C), making it suitable for most consumer electronic products.

Polyimide: It is relatively expensive, but it has excellent high-temperature resistance (up to 150°C or even higher), chemical resistance and dimensional stability, and is suitable for harsh environments (such as automotive, industrial and medical).

Adhesive: Firmly bond the conductor to the insulating film.

Reinforcing plate: At both ends or specific positions of the FFC, a relatively hard reinforcing plate (commonly fiberglass board or polyimide board) is usually added. Its function is:

Convenient for inserting the connector.

Protect the end conductors from bending and damage.

Provide support planes for welding or crimping.

Terminal/Connector interface: The two ends of the flexible flat cable need to be paired with the connectors on the equipment. Common interface forms include:

ZIF connector: Zero insertion force connector, which fixes the FFC through a sliding lock to prevent damage to the gold fingers during insertion and removal.

LIF connector: Low insertion force connector, with an insertion force slightly greater than that of ZIF.

FFC/FPC connector: A connector specifically designed for connecting FFC or FPC.

Direct soldering: The conductors at the end of the FFC (sometimes tin-plated or gold-plated) can be directly soldered onto the PCB pads (with support from reinforcing boards).

Crimping: Connect to the FFC using special crimping terminals.

3.Core Advantages of FFC Wiring Harnesses

Ultra-thin and flat: The thickness is usually less than 1mm, and can even be below 0.2mm, which greatly saves the precious space inside the equipment and is a key component for achieving the thinning and lightness of the equipment.

High flexibility: It can be freely bent, folded and twisted, adapting to the complex wiring paths and space limitations inside the device. It is especially suitable for connections that require repeated opening and closing (such as flip phone and laptop screens) or moving parts.

Lightweight: Compared with traditional wiring harnesses, the weight is significantly reduced.

Neat and beautiful wiring: The flat structure makes the wiring more orderly and neat, reduces clutter, and is conducive to heat dissipation and later maintenance.

Strong customizability: The length, width, number of cores, spacing, termination method, and position of the reinforcing plate can all be customized according to the specific design requirements of the customer.

Excellent electrical performance: The conductor spacing is stable, the signal transmission is relatively stable, and the anti-interference ability is good (especially in high-frequency applications, a reasonably designed ground wire layout is very important).

Easy and efficient assembly: Especially when using ZIF/LIF connectors, they can be plugged and unplugged quickly and conveniently, making them suitable for automated production.

4. The Differences between FFC and FPC

FFC cable is often mentioned together with FPC. FPC stands for Flexible Printed Circuit.

Similarities: Both are flexible and flat interconnection solutions.

Main differences:

Structure: FFC is the concept of "wire", composed of pre-formed parallel conductors bonded between insulating films, and its structure is relatively simple. FPC stands for the concept of "board", which involves fabricating complex copper foil circuit patterns on flexible substrates through photolithography and etching processes. These patterns can include pads, vias, and even components (referred to as FPCBA), enabling multi-layer wiring and offering more powerful functions.

Cost: Generally, the cost of FFC with a simple structure is lower than that of FPC.

Application complexity: FFC is mainly used for simple point-to-point or multi-point signal/power transmission. FPC can achieve more complex circuit interconnections, component integration and three-dimensional spatial routing.

Customization: The design freedom of FPC is much higher than that of FFC.

Simply put, FFC is a flexible "cable", while FPC is a flexible "circuit board". The two complement each other and jointly serve the interconnection requirements of modern electronic devices.

5. Typical Application Fields

Flexible flat cable, due to their unique advantages, are widely used in almost all electronic devices that require internal interconnection

Consumer electronics: smartphones, tablets, laptops (screen connection, motherboard connection, keyboard connection), digital cameras, video cameras, game consoles, LCD/LED displays.

Office equipment: Printers, scanners, copiers.

Automotive electronics: instrument panels, central control screens, on-board cameras, sensors, door modules, seat control (high-temperature resistant materials such as PI are required).

Medical equipment: portable monitors, endoscopes, handheld devices (with high requirements for reliability and flexibility).

Industrial control: PLC, HMI panel, internal connection of robots.

Household appliances: Smart refrigerator, washing machine control panel, air conditioner controller.

6. Key Parameters to Consider When Choosing Flexible Flat Cable FFC Wiring Harness

Pitch: The distance (Pitch) from the center to the center of a conductor.

Core count: The quantity of conductors.

Length: Total length.

Conductor specifications: copper foil thickness and width.

Insulating materials: polyester or polyimide, determine the temperature resistance grade and cost.

Termination methods: ZIF/LIF connector types, direct soldering, crimping, etc.

The position, material and thickness of the reinforcing plate.

Electrical requirements: Rated voltage, current, impedance (important for high-speed signals).

Bending life: The expected number of times it needs to be bent.

Environmental protection requirements: Whether it needs to comply with standards such as RoHS and halogen-free.

7. Summary

Flexible flat cable FFC wiring harness, with their core features of being ultra-thin, flexible, lightweight and customizable, have become the cornerstone of internal interconnection in modern compact electronic devices. It plays an irreplaceable role in saving space, simplifying assembly, enhancing equipment reliability and achieving complex structural designs. As electronic devices continue to develop towards being thinner, lighter, more integrated and more functional, FFC wiring harness technology will also keep innovating to meet the more stringent connection requirements in the future.
