What is a braided wiring harness?

Braided wire harnesses are wire harnesses wrapped with braided sleeves. Braided cable sheaths are used as cable organization or protection; Therefore, it can also be called a wire protection sleeve. Looms help prevent vibration and heat. Usually, these sleeves have interwoven plastic fibers (polyester or any other plastic)

These sleeves can protect cables and wires from wear and tear, corrosion, moisture, high temperatures, chemicals and electrical waves.

Types of braided cable sheaths

1.Split braided steel wire sleeve

The split braided steel wire sleeve has a cut along its length and closes automatically after installation. Therefore, you can call it a self-closing braided sleeve. These lightweight sliding sleeves have wear-resistant properties. You can use them in the pre-existing cable harnesses, but you cannot disassemble them. These sleeves are made of polyester fibers and can easily reach the wiring harness inside.

2.Expandable braided sleeve

These sleeves are made of polyester fibers and are very easy to install. Due to their open woven structure, they allow heat and moisture to pass through. Because they are scalable, you can put multiple lines into them and still get the flexibility you need. You can also find polystyrene expansion sleeves. However, these are cable assemblies that are more suitable for use at high temperatures. They have high chemical resistance and low moisture stability.

The material for braided cable conduits

Nylon

Nylon is widely popular for its flexibility and lightness. It allows for easier installation and adjustment, which makes it suitable for automotive applications.Nylon is highly effective in preventing moisture accumulation. However, compared with other options, it is less stable at high temperatures and has limited resistance to ultraviolet radiation, corrosion and chemicals.

Polyester

Polyester fibers can almost expand to three times their original size. Therefore, it can closely fit with the surrounding irregular shapes and oversized cables. Polyester braided sleeves offer exquisite wear resistance, heat resistance and corrosion resistance, but they may be unstable in extremely hot or cold conditions.

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

Polyethylene terephthalate is a soft and lightweight polyester, just like nylon. PET sleeves are easy to install, can easily adapt to various shapes and meet various uses. In addition, PET has extremely strong fluid and water resistance. This is an ideal choice, suitable for applications of automotive fluids (engine fluids and gases) and clean chemical cables. PET sleeves reduce the pressure on stretched cables and prevent any breakage or cracking.

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) monofilament

Polyphenylene sulfide monofilament is one of the lightest woven sleeves. This durable material can withstand chemicals and solvents very well. It is inert to acids, fuels, steam and strong alkalis, and thus is highly suitable for applications that come into contact with these substances. PPS is flame-retardant. In addition, PPS is an ideal choice for specific applications such as aerospace and telecommunications industries because it is moisture-proof and chemical-resistant, and can withstand high temperatures.The disadvantages of PPS are its relatively low flexibility and limited corrosion resistance and UV resistance.

Glass fiber /Nomex

Glass fiber braided sleeves are more durable because they are made of glass fiber braided materials such as Nomex. Nomex is highly expandable and has heat resistance and flame retardancy. Its melting point is significantly higher. This material is also moisture-proof, acid-proof, chemical-proof, wear-proof, radiation-proof (gamma, beta and X-ray) and solvent-proof. However, Nomex may not be flexible and is not immune to ultraviolet rays.
